This Week at Sunchild - Monday July 2, 2001

Moose Mash

Our last letter explained much of what is taking place at the present time. On Tuesday, with just a few days left before our departure from Sunchild, we ran into a moose on our way home from a trip to town. Thankfully we were in our pickup truck, so no one but the moose was hurt. Normally we would use the car for a trip like that. We hit the moose full broadside, which means, because of their extremely long legs, with a car the moose will always come right through the windshield. Also, this one wasn't completely full grown. A fellow was killed very near that same spot, in the last year or so when he hit a moose with a small car. I can't understand why there was so little damage to the truck; at the speed we hit him. We were only a few miles from a friends house, so they were able to take us home. The truck is in the shop now, again friends of ours, and they will be able to get it back on the road for about a thousand dollars, using parts from the auto wreckers, except for a new radiator which they had to get. It was at dusk going into the sunset, and I never saw it until it came across the centerline. Moose are a dark camouflage color. When it happened it was like I wasn't really driving, but watching it all from a distance. The truck seemed to slow down before we hit the brakes. We know it was all being worked out the way it was supposed to be. I felt so sorry for the moose as it rolled over and over in front of the truck. They are very awkward appearing in such situations. The big truck will be leaving for Ft. McPherson on Saturday the 14th. I will fly the 182 up, unload the truck, and ride back on the big truck. By then the pickup will be fixed, and the family will all go up together. We are so thankful the Lord put it in the heart of Pete to move our belongings with his semi! Much of the ministry here will be carried on by local Christians. In our last service on Sunday, a pastor came to visit who is interested in ministering here as an outreach ministry. He is from Ghana, Africa, and has worked with the Indian people in Manitoba. Also the Sunchild Band administration gave us an honorarium gift for 25 years of service to their people. This is unprecedented, but with the help we have received from all you folks, will make it possible not only to relocate, but use toward getting a good reliable vehicle for use in the Arctic. We very much depend on your prayers, especially now at this important time of making decisions and special needs. In Jesus, Rodger, Karen, & family
