This summer we got into several places where we had never been before in all our years of Arctic Outreach, including Arctic Village in Alaska, and Tuktoyaktuk on the coast of the Arctic Ocean in the Northwest Territories. This picture was taken en route to Tuktoyaktuk. The coast is about 8 miles ahead and the ocean is still frozen over. Below is a mixture of lakes and tundra. This is the land of the Eskimo, which are now known by their native title of Inuit, here in Canada. Of course there are no roads or much of any sign of human life. The odd hunting camp, snowmobile track, and even winter 'ice roads' can occasionally be seen near settlements.
